Chapter 7

When the plane on which he flew back to Baltimore landed, Craig reached for his cell phone and dialed Kisha’s number. “My plane just touched down,” he said when she answered. “I should knock on your door within ninety minutes at the latest, earlier if I can make it.”

“Wonderful. I’ll be right here. It’s cold outside. I opened the door to get the paper, and that frigid wind almost blew me away. Are you going home first?”

“Hadn’t planned to. Why?”

“Just checking. I can’t wait to see you.”

“Same here. The plane’s at the gate, so I’ll be kissing you soon.”

“You say the nicest things. Bye for now.”

An hour and twenty-five minutes later, he stepped into Kisha’s house, dropped his overnight bag on the floor of her foyer, and pulled her into his arms. His only thought was getting her as close to him as possible, and he couldn’t do that to his satisfaction. She stepped back from him with a quizzical expression on her face and, as if approving of what she saw, she stood on tiptoe, parted her lips and urged his mouth to hers. He hadn’t wanted to kiss her, because he needed her so badly and he didn’t want to give her the impression that he thought only of getting her in bed. Her kisses always sent him into a tailspin. He ended the kiss and hugged her.

“You’re lethal,” he said. “How about a glass of water?”

She looked at him as if she didn’t believe what she heard. “You go in there and have a seat,” she said, pointing toward the living room. “I’ll be there in a couple of minutes.” A few minutes later, she returned with coffee, vanilla ice cream, barely warm hot-cross buns and a glass of water. She put the tray on the coffee table, sat beside him and took his hand.

“Did you have a successful trip?”

“Absolutely. I did half of my Christmas shopping, saw a good play, an opera and a superb concert. Did you miss me?”

Her left hand stroked the side of his face. “Of course I did. You were gone three-quarters of the weekend.”

He gave her the shopping bag that he’d placed on the floor between his feet. “I saw this, and I wanted you to have it.”

While she stared at the curly, cream-coated baby lamb, his nerves began a slow shiver throughout his body. He didn’t know how she’d take the gesture.

“What…what is it?” he asked, when tears clouded her eyes and slowly dampened her sweater. She wiped her eyes with the hem of the sweater.

“Kisha, what is it. Don’t you like it?” She shook her head from side to side as the tears gushed from her eyes. Thinking that he had upset her with the gift, which was obviously a child’s toy, he attempted to retrieve it, but she held on to it. “Sweetheart, the last thing I wanted was to upset you. I saw it, and it looked…so warm and…I thought of you.”

He put his arms around her and rocked her.
